Avengers Surpasses Harry Potter, Becomes Third-Biggest Film Ever

It looks like superheroes are more popular than boy wizards. Need proof? According to The Hollywood Reporter, this weekend Marvel’s The Avengers surpassed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 to become the third highest-grossing film of all time in the global box office. It also unseated The Dark Knight to become the No. 3 film of all time in North America.

The total to date for the Joss Whedon-directed blockbuster is $1.331 billion. The two films still ahead of The Avengers happen to both be by James Cameron: Avatar at No. 1 with $2.8 billion, and Titanic at No. 2 with $1.8 billion.

Could the Marvel Studios/Disney film go on to topple Cameron’s juggernauts? It’s highly, highly unlikely. But just in case, we have our “Avengers sinks Titanic” headlines ready to run.
