WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Avengers #41 by Jason Aaron, Javier Garron, David Curiel & VC's Cory Petit, on sale now

The Phoenix Force is currently forcing some of Marvel's greatest heroes -- and a few powerful villains -- to face off for the right to become the next host of the Phoenix Force. And while some of those battles have gone well, others are poised to set up potentially dangerous new Phoenix hosts.

While some of the fights remain undecided, many of the battles to determine the fate of the Phoenix have already been decided. But which figures from across the Marvel Universe have already won -- and which ones have lost?

RED WIDOW VS. HOWARD THE DUCK

The Red Widow is a leading figure in the current Winter Guard, Russia's own resident superhero team. The mysterious warrior has proven to be a deadly agent in the past, and she continues her impressive record in "Enter the Phoenix." With the Phoenix Force empowering her and giving her a burning blade, Red Widow is surprised to find herself staring down Howard the Duck. The nominally-comical character has also been empowered and is heavily focused on the impact this power boost could have on the world and how it perceives him.

But Red Widow is wholly unimpressed by this change in Howard and quickly assaults him. Catching him by surprise, the assassin relentlessly stabs him with her enflamed sword, seemingly killing him. Although the Phoenix Force will likely restore Howard to full health when it returns him to normal, the Phoenix Force does consider this a loss for Howard and sends the Red Widow back to the White Hot Room to await her next challenge.

HYPERION VS. SHANG-CHI

Hyperion is one of Marvel's strongest characters, with powers comparable to those of Superman. This makes the prospect of him gaining the Phoenix Force so worrisome -- especially with Hyperion unwittingly working at the behest of Mephisto. As soon as he gains the Phoenix Powers, Hyperion finds himself psionically connected to the rest of the galaxy. Initially, Hyperion is unbothered by this change, reasoning only someone as powerful as he could wield that power well.

But as his consciousness expands to encompass more and more of the universe, Hyperion begins to be overwhelmed. Exposure to so many minds, souls and ideas radically expanded and changed his way of seeing creation -- something that horrified him. Screaming that he can't be so open-minded, Hyperion yields from the battle -- while Shang-Chi, who hasn't lifted a single finger and instead has been meditating the entire time, wins by default.

BLACK PANTHER VS. MAN-THING

Black Panther's wealth of experience has made him one of Marvel's most formidable figures. He's held his own against gods, and thrown down with despots. But at first glance, even he shouldn't be able to withstand the might of Man-Thing. Capable of using mystical properties to burn away anyone with fear in their hearts, Man-Thing reaches out to Black Panther as their battle starts -- only for the King of Wakanda to be unaffected.

Realizing that the influence of the Phoenix Force is driving Man-Thing to battle, Black Panther quickly adapts -- utilizing that cosmic power himself and defeating Man-Thing with relative ease. This returns Black Panther to the White Hot Room, where he's confronted by the Phoenix Force itself. Revealing that it wants Black Panther as its new host, the Phoenix Force is almost amused when T'Challa refuses -- and sends him back into battle almost immediately, this time against the Squadron Supreme of America's Nighthawk.

WHICH FIGHTS ARE STILL UNDECIDED

There are a handful of other battles across Avengers #41, and although they have not been decided one way or the other, many of them have clear favorites: Shanna the She-Devil (along with her sabertooth ally Zabu) go up against Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, with Shanna and Zabu shown combating Devil Dinosaur in a bid to remove the physical threat before Moon Girl can do anything. American Eagle has been pitted against Luke Cage, and comes out swinging. Black Panther and Nighthawk both embrace the Phoenix Power for their duel, shaking the very foundations of the Earth itself.

Two other figures who both have experience with the Phoenix Force are also still standing in the tournament. Jane Foster -- who encountered the cosmic force during her time as Thor -- finds herself combatting the Orb, who is eager to use the Phoenix Force to cause more pain. As Valkyrie, Foster has plenty of fighting experience and easily lands a hard hit against him, suggesting she should win the fight. But under the seas, there's little an already exhausted Echo can muster to throw at Namor, who briefly hosted the Phoenix Force during Avengers vs. X-Men and now wants the power back.
