Avengers’ Hulk Has Ruffalo’s Face

Marvel released the Hulk concept poster for next summer’s Joss Whedon-directed take on The Avengers on the last day of Comic-Con International in San Diego. While the image is a painting rather than a film still, it’s clear that some of star Mark Ruffalo’s face has made its way into the design. This is a first for the big-screen Hulks, according to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

“The most important thing is that face,” he said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “As you can already see in that concept painting, it is — more than any Hulk that’s ever been done in live action — a Hulk that let’s you see the actor in there.”

“You will be able to see Ruffalo in there. That was a big revelation for us.”

Feige also spoke a little bit about the character design as a whole, which is something you don’t necessarily get a feel for in the painting. “He’ll be about the same size he was in The Incredible Hulk [which was about 9 feet tall] or maybe a little bit smaller. His muscles won’t be quite as cut. We figure he’s been the Hulk now for a few years and [his physique is changing]. He’s not as cut or as ripped as he was in The Incredible Hulk.”

The Avengers, which opens May 4, 2012, also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgård.
