A strange artifact has cropped up right outside Disneyland’s Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout ride, and it’s not an escapee from The Collector’s vast cache of exotic flora and fauna. No, it’s a hatch bearing the familiar insignia of Marvel’s greatest superhero team: the Avengers. The hatch was first noticed shortly after the ride’s grand opening last week, and it might be teasing one of the park’s big, upcoming expansions.

The new Guardians of the Galaxy ride was announced in Comic-Con International: San Diego in 2016, along with a tease from Joe Rhode, Disney’s Imagineering executive, that the ride would just be the first step in a massive expansion for the park.

“[The Ride] will be the first of a whole new universe in Disney California Adventure,” Rhode said. “All of this is happening as we speak.”

A Marvel-themed expansion for Disneyland has long been rumored. The Avengers hatch sits on the right side of the Guardians of the Galaxy ride. It’s reasonable to speculate that the hatch’s placement teases the location of a new Marvel section for the park, though it’s far from a sure thing. The hatch means something, but, in traditional Marvel fashion, there’s just no telling what -- yet.
