"Avatar" fans have experienced an emotional roller coaster over the past few years, with timelines laid out for the sequels to James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster, only to be pushed back, again and again. However, now release dates have been officially announced for all four sequels, beginning in 2020.

A photo of Cameron and his crew was posted this morning on the "Avatar" Facebook page, accompanied by the announcement of the beginning of production, and a release schedule that takes the franchise through 2025.

Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!

The news arrives a little more than a month after the filmmaker confirmed "Avatar 2" wouldn't hit its previous target date of 2018. "What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So we’re not making ‘Avatar 2’. We’re making ‘Avatar 2,’ 3, 4 and 5," Cameron explained, adding, "I know where I’m going to be for the next eight years of my life,” he said. “It’s not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it. It took us four-and-a-half years to make one movie and now we’re making four.”

"Avatar 2" was initially slated for release in December 2016, with its follow-up to arrive in December 2018, but that was before Cameron's franchise plans changed, and he ultimately settled on four more films. Along the way, the intended premiere of "Avatar 2" slipped first to 2017, then 2018 and now 2020.

The highest-grossing film of all time, Fox's "Avatar" grossed nearly $2.8 billion worldwide, and was nominated for nine Academy Awards (it won three, for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects).
