Author Mark Chadbourn Brings “The Age of Misrule” Prequel to Desperado & Image

Official Press Release

February 2, 2006, Atlanta, GA – Continuing its mission of publishing the highest quality comics from top-notch creators, Desperado Publishing is set to release Book of Shadows, award-winning British fantasy author, Mark Chadbourn’s, eagerly anticipated prequel to his best selling three novel series, The Age of Misrule. Book of Shadows will feature full color art by Bo Hampton and both 32 page issues will be on sale in April each with a cover price of $3.50.

In Book of Shadows the ancient pagan gods are returning to the land from which they were banished millennia ago. Following in their footsteps are creatures of folklore: the Fabulous Beasts, shape-shifters and Night Walkers, and other, less wholesome beings. As they grow in power, so technology starts to fail. It is myth and magic that now rule supreme in this new Dark Age: The Age of Misrule.

In this time of trouble, one flawed young woman has a great part to play. Traumatized by the recent death of her boyfriend, Annie Lovelock spends her nights in desperate Wiccan rituals…until she accidentally conjures up one of those beings, the Morrigan, the fearsome goddess of blood and death. Gifted abilities that she does not understand and sent on a quest beyond her comprehension, Annie finds herself caught in a war between two age-old rivals for power.

She must find a way to cross the barrier between this world and the mysterious, magical home of the fabled beings to reclaim an object of power. But is Annie being manipulated into delivering up humanity to the forces that now rule our world?

“With Book of Shadows I wanted to tell a story that was firmly rooted in a genre that is under-represented in comics – fantasy,” said Chadbourn. “But instead of setting the tale in some ancient time or unknown land, I wanted to bring the wonder and the mystery right to the reader’s doorstep…in the world we see around us.”

Chadbourn is the author of 14 novels including World’s End, Darkest Hour and Always Forever. He has written for British television and currently serves as senior writer on the series Doctors. He has also worked as a journalist writing for magazines and newspapers and he’s written the comic books Raven Chronicles, Fatalis and Negative Burn. He has won the British Fantasy Award, August Derleth Award for Best Novel and Fear magazine Best New Author award.

“Book of Shadows is exactly the type of series I want to publish at Desperado,” said Desperado Publishing publisher, Joe Pruett. “It’s a great fantasy tale with a built in audience. Once Mark’s readers realize that he has taken The Age of Misrule into comics and that this is the only place this prequel story will be available, I expect retailers will be in for a treat.”
