“Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate” Will Introduce the Series’ First Transgender Character

Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate,” the latest installment of the longstanding video game franchise, will introduce the series’ first transgender character. EuroGamer reports the character, Ned Wynert, will assign quests to the game’s protagonists, Jacob and Evie Fry.

Additionally, Ubisoft has altered the opening statement of the game. Previously, each installment opened with a statement that described the work as “designed, developed and produced by a multicultural team of various religious faiths and beliefs.” Now, the statement will read, “Inspired by historical events and characters, this work of fiction was designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities.”

“Inclusiveness is something that’s super important for us as a team,” Assassin’s Creed Syndicate creative director Marc-Alexis Côte said in a statement. “We’ve made a good push towards diversity and how we approach different subjects in the game.”

Last year, the developer came under fire when Alex Amancio, creative director at Ubisoft, told Polygon they dropped the female co-op from “Assassin’s Creed Unity” because of the extra work. Now, however, “Syndicate” will allow players to chose between playable male and female protagonists as well as include this new transgender character, showing a sign of Ubisoft’s new dedication to inclusiveness.

“Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate” will be available at retailers on October 23.
