Unconfirmed reports surfaced Thursday afternoon from both Latino Review and Umberto Gonzalez, formerly of the same site, that 18-year-old "Hugo" and "Ender's Game" star Asa Butterfield has been offered the role as Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios' new big-screen Spider-Man. Both reports say Butterfield and the studios are currently in negotiations.

Butterfield was on Sony's reported shortlist that made the rounds online last month. No official announcement has been made pertaining to the casting.

The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit commented shortly after the news broke that Butterfield was due to screen test for the role, but other actors are still under consideration.

What I know: Asa Butterfield was due to test for SPIDER-MAN this week. But so were a few others. Is Asa Peter Parker?- Borys Kit (@Borys_Kit) May 14, 2015

Are they done testing? What I know: There certainly is no offer. Yet. What I also know: There are certainly many rooting for Asa.- Borys Kit (@Borys_Kit) May 14, 2015

The next big-screen Spider-Man, following Andrew Garfield in that role, is expected debut in Marvel Studios' "Captain America: Civil War," scheduled for release on May 6, 2016, before starring in a solo film -- a collaborative effort between Sony and Marvel -- scheduled for release on July 28, 2017.
