In "Arrow's" shocking winter finale, Felicity's boyfriend Billy Malone was killed by Oliver, who mistook the disguised police detective for Prometheus, all according to the villain's elaborate plans. The news of course shook Felicity, who will wrestle with the grief and fallout of Billy's death when the CW drama returns in January.

While Felicity won't blame Oliver, she will look outside Team Arrow for help in her quest for vengeance against Prometheus.

"Felicity is going to meet some people who are both a bit tied to her past but also very much tied to this new future she’s contemplating," Executive Producer Wendy Mericle tells TV Line, "and that’s going to draw her away from the team and lead her to do some things that are pretty morally questionable."

While typically the voice of reason on Team Arrow, Felicity has demonstrated her "morally questionable" side before. For instance, "The Secret Origins of Felicity Smoak" revealed her past as a hacker who operated in a gray area. Felicity does exhibit restraint regularly on "Arrow," but going after Prometheus for Billy's death will explore her morality even further.

"This season we have said we’re going to take her to a darker place, and you’re seeing the genesis of the reason why, right here," Mericle said. "It’s a color for Felicity that we’ve always known she had the potential for, but we never had the right story to play. We’re excited about it."

It's hard to say if and when she'll let Oliver and Team Arrow know of her plan. So far this season Felicity's only role has been as Overwatch, Team Arrow's trusty hacker. Taking Felicity on a revenge storyline will be a fascinating twist for her a character and a much-needed change of pace for her. Yes, Felicity needs to stay on Team Arrow, but she also deserves to find some justice on her own for Billy. It sounds like "Arrow" will use his death to explore this new, darker side of Felicity.

Returning Wednesday, Jan. 25, to The CW, "Arrow" stars Stephen Amell, Emily Bett Rickards, David Ramsey, John Barrowman, Willa Holland and Echo Kellum.
