Bad news, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans: Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, won't be making an appearance in next year's "Ant-Man and the Wasp." Amidst rumors that Hawkeye would pop up in the film, director Peyton Reed took to Twitter to shut idea that down.

The Russians are swarm-tweeting that Hawkeye is in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP. #FakeNews

Of course, Reed's response is tongue-in-cheek. Here, he refers to the ongoing investigation into allegations that Russian President Vladimir Putin worked with President Dondald Trump's administration to get him elected by suggesting that the Russians are aiming to do something similar with the film. Paired with the hashtag "Fake News," one of Trump's favorite accusations, Reed's Tweet indicates that the Hawkeye rumors are only that.

Though Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye won't show up, plenty of MCU stars will return for "Ant-Man and the Wasp," including Michael Peña.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” is scheduled to begin filming this summer and will see the major characters from the original films reprising their starring roles. Little is known about the plot of the film itself, but the post-credits sequence in “Ant-Man” hinted at Hope Van Dyne donning the superhero costume of her mother, Janet van Dyne, the Wasp.

Debuting in theaters July 6, 2018, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is a production of Marvel Studios directed by Peyton Reed and starring Evangeline Lilly, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Michael Peña and Michael Douglas.
