The parent series was unceremoniously canceled by NBC last year, and now news comes that another Law & Order will come to a close with its next season. Can television survive such a lawless environment?
The USA Network has renewed Law & Order: Criminal Intent for one final season of just eight episodes, with Vincent D’Onofrio returning for all episodes as Detective Robert Goren, replacing Jeff Goldblum (who himself replaced D’Onofrio last year) as series lead. USA’s president of original programming Jeff Wachtel explained the decision by saying,
We have been the fortunate caretakers of this legendary series, and we plan to give it the world-class farewell it so richly deserves… The plan is for this to be the series finale, but with a Dick Wolf franchise, one really never knows until it’s over.
The network clearly enjoys working with Wolf, as this news was paired with the announcement that USA is working with the producer on developing a new pilot.
The show’s cancellation leaves Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as the flagship of the franchise, with Law & Order: Los Angeles launching next week and the British version of the series, Law & Order: UK, due to cross the Atlantic soon.
