For Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the sky is the limit in terms of what can be done with the company’s comic book properties.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two is set in place, and planning has begun on Phase Three, which means there is an opportunity for more superheroes to get their own standalone movies. MTV News recently chatted with Feige about the chances of, say, the Hulk getting his own flick now that Mark Ruffalo is portraying the character. Feige said it’s an idea that has definitely been tossed around.
“Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in Avengers? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could,” he said. “We certainly are not even going to attempt that until Avengers 2. So there’s a lot of time to think about it.”
He continued, “Part of what’s fun about the way we played him in Avengers is the ensemble quality of it. I think the pathos and humor, most importantly, that Mark and Joss [Whedon] brought to it showcased a different element of Hulk that’s there in the comics, and was always inherent in his character. But when he was so brooding in his other two films, he didn’t get to have that wry sense of humor that Mark did such an amazing job performing.”
In terms of which storylines a Hulk movie could follow, Feige has a couple of ideas on his mind.
“I don’t think there’s a lot that we couldn’t do some day, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe,” he said. “Planet Hulk is a cool story. World War Hulk is a cool story.”
With that being said, Feige added that not every storyline following the Hulk in outer space would work for a solo movie. “I think there’s pitfalls of continuity-overload, and mythology getting so dense that it almost collapses in on itself,” he said. “It happens every few decades or so in the comics. Apart from that, I’d say everything is on the table.”
