American Hustle and Gravity led the nominations for the 86th annual Academy Awards, tying with 10 each, including nods for best picture. 12 Years a Slave followed close behind with nine -- including, again, best picture. Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska, Philomena and The Wolf of Wall Street -- nine films in all -- are also vying for Hollywood's top honor.

Announced this morning in Beverly Hills by by Chris Hemsworth and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the nominations also include acting nods for Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender for 12 Years a Slave, Sandra Bullock for Gravity, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club, and Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street.
12 Years a Slave is brutal, thought-provoking
For best director: David O. Russell (American Hustle), Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity), Alexander Payne (Nebraska), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street).
