During Comic-Con International, MTV spoke with previous Spider-Man director Marc Webb, the man that helmed the two installments in Sony's attempted "Amazing" franchise. 2014's "Amazing Spider-Man 2" failed to outdo its predecessor at the box office and, a year later, the character and his universe are back under partial Marvel Studios control and the character already has another reboot well underway.

"I'm really psyched that Spider-Man has gotten to go back to the Marvel universe," Webb told MTV. "I'm really excited to see that incarnation. And Jon Watts is directing it. I knew him from the old music video days and he'd done some really fantastic music videos so it's really exciting. It's sad a little bit to surrender that in a way, but it's as it must be, I guess."

The new Spidey film, which will arrive in 2017, will feature Tom Holland as Peter Parker and, as was recently reported, Marisa Tomei as a much-less-geriatric Aunt May. Webb offered up his thoughts on the nature of the reboot and how it applies to Spider-Man.

"I think there's a huge capacity for reinvention within the realm of the Spider-Man universe," said Webb. "It happens all the time in the comics, and like I've said many times before, Spider-Man belongs on screen. And there's a lot of different ways to interpret that character, whether it's Miles Morales or Peter Parker or whomever. And I'm really curious to see how that evolves."

There's lots of speculation that Holland will debut as Spider-Man in "Captain America: Civil War," which opens on May 6, 2016; if he doesn't, then he'll most likely make his big screen debut when the new Spider-Man film opens on July 28, 2017.
