The first trailer for "Snowtown" director Justin Kurzel's adaptation of "Macbeth" delivers a darker take on the Shakespearean tragedy than most of us might've imagined in high school.

Michael Fassbender ("X-Men: Days of Future Past") stars as the 11th-century Scottish warrior and leader brought low by ambition and desire in a reinterpretation of the play grounded in the reality of the time. "Macbeth" was selected to compete last month for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival.

Opening Oct. 2 in the United Kingdom (a U.S. date hasn't been announced), "Macbeth" also stars Marion Cotillard as Lady Macbeth, Sean Harris as Macduff and Paddy Considine as Banquo.
