Following a press-day event at J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, new details of the super-secretive Star Trek Into Darkness are at last coming to light. Although we still don’t know the name of Benedict Cumberbatch’s mysterious villain — is he really “John Harrison”? — a report from IGN.com provides us with the surprising identity of Alice Eve’s character, along with a couple of other tantalizing tidbits.
Be warned: If you don’t want your Star Trek experience spoiled, turn back now!
Alice Eve isn’t Elizabeth Dehner or Janice Rand, but rather Carol Marcus, the renowned molecular biologist revealed in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan as the leader of “Project Genesis” and, oh, yeah, an old flame of James T. Kirk who gave birth to their son David.
That news undoubtedly will add fuel to speculation that Cumberbatch is playing Khan Noonien Singh, but that seems unlikely to be the case (despite the insistence of some outlets). For Khan to go from genetically engineered tyrant from the late 20th century to a member of Starfleet would by quite the feat, even in Abrams’ alternate timeline.
Klingons, as well as the Klingon homeworld, do indeed appear in the film, with the longtime enemies of Starfleet depicted with the ridged heads we’ve seen in most modern interpretations.
Opening May 17, Star Trek Into Darkness also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood and Peter Weller.
