AKA Jessica Jones ‘Definitely’ Set in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe

ABC’s AKA Jessica Jones will be set firmly within Marvel’s cinematic universe, the series’ writer and producer confirms, with Luke Cage and Carol Danvers playing central roles. However, she acknowledges that rights agreements will make allusions to some other characters impossible.

“It’s very tricky navigation there,” Twilight writer Melissa Rosenberg tells HitFix. “You can’t mention one guy because Fox has the rights to that guy and Universal has the rights to the other one.  There are a lot of boundaries on who you can and can’t use. I had Jessica Jones and Luke Cage and Carol Danvers [for the pilot script]. Basically, I wanted those three guys — then I would have a series. Everyone else we can be digging into lesser-known characters or taking known characters and renaming them.”

She notes that Tony Stark and Stark Industries are mentioned in her pilot script. “As we go along things will alter in terms of what is made available to us, but we’re definitely in that universe,” Rosenberg says. “We are in no way denying that that universe exists. And as much as I can I’m going to pull everything in from there that I can use.”

Announced in December 2010, AKA Jessica Jones is based on Marvel’s Alias, the series created in 2001 by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos about an embittered former superheroine who, after a traumatic experience, gives up her costumed identity and opens a detective agency. But once she settles in, she discovers her services are sought by clients with superhero connections.

Rosenberg, a former writer and producer for Showtime’s Dexter, mentioned in an interview posted just last week that she’s hopeful the new series will find a home on ABC’s fall 2012 schedule. She tells HitFix that the long wait for the pilot greenlight is because, “I wrote it kind of off-season so it fell in between seasons.”

Bendis will consult on AKA Jessica Jones, with Rosenberg, 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb, Joe Quesada and Alan Fine serving as executive producers.
