Perhaps unsurprisingly, fans can expect Robbie Reyes' origin to undergo some changes when Ghost Rider debuts this season on "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

In Marvel comics, Robbie becomes the flaming Spirit of Vengeance after mercenaries gun him down while attempting to retrieve the pills that transform Calvin Zabo into the villainous Mister Hyde. While Zabo has been a significant presence on "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," where he was portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan, he apparently won't have a hand in the rise of Ghost Rider.

When a TVLine reader asked whether Robbie's introduction might mean the return of MacLachlan as Zabo, who was last seen with his memory altered and no knowledge of S.H.I.E.L.D. or his daughter Daisy, the website turned to co-showrunner Jed Whedon.

"We can't say much about what we're going to do with [Robbie Reyes'] origin, but we are doing our own spin on it," he said. "We don't want people who have read the comics to know exactly what's coming."

Told viewers would like to see MacLachlan's return, Whedon replied, "So would we."

Gabriel Luna will play Robbie Reyes on "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," which kicks off its fourth season Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
