SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "Lockup," the latest episode of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

In "Lockup," the latest episode of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", Director Jeffrey "Patriot" Mace had his moment to shine -- but that spotlight also shed some light on a few of his dark secrets, not the least of which was his involvement in one pinnacle moment from "Captain America: Civil War."

During the episode, Mace went on television for a live debate with Rota Nadeerthe notoriously anti-Inhuman senator who helped spread panic during the Watchdogs' global blackouts. The moderator went on to introduce both characters, specifically citing Mace's heroism during the attack on the United Nations in Vienna; fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will recall that Zemo executed that same explosion in "Captain America: Civil War" before pinning the blame on Bucky "Winter Soldier" Barnes. What's more, Mace came out as an Inhuman on live television, earning him some serious points in the polls.

However, Mace isn't as squeaky clean as he appears. As he pressured Simmons to retake a polygraph test, she threatened him with blackmail, saying that he wouldn't want the public to know what really happened in Vienna. He quickly acquiesced, telling his assistant to cancel Simmons' polygraph tests going forward. Though what happened that day was never spoken out loud, it's clear that Mace doesn't want that information seeing the light of day.

Simmons wasn't the only one to get in on the blackmailing action. Nadeer paid Mace a visit with some fresh information for the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Agent Phil Coulson and his team were conducting an illegal operation in a Los Angeles prison with an unknown -- and clearly dangerous -- Enhanced individual that we know as Ghost Rider. In order to put the kibosh on the release of the video Nadeer had in her possession, Mace asked her what she wanted -- and the episode cut to black. Based on her previous actions, it's clear Nadeer doesn't have anything good in mind for the Inhumans, but we'll have to wait for the next episode and beyond to see exactly what her plans are.

Airing Tuesdays at 10 pm ET/PT on ABC, "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Chloe Bennet as Daisy "Quake" Johnson, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie and more.
