The Superior has a plan, and that plan involves none other than Jeffrey "Patriot" Mace. In a new clip from "The Man Behind the Shield," the next episode of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", the Superior explains his twisted philosophy as well as his strategy to draw Coulson to him.

The clip opens with Coulson, Daisy, Mack and a few other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents bursting into a room. There, Coulson reveals that the team has found Mace's suit -- but not Mace himself. As they deliberate over what to do next, Coulson reveals that he's worried they'll find Mace's body next.

The clip then cuts to Mace, who is half naked and bound to a chair. He appears to wake up, then takes in his surroundings, only to come face-to-face with Aida. As Mace recoils, the Superior steps from the shadows and recalls one of his childhood memories. He describes his father, a poor, hardworking oil drill worker, and a rich, entitled man from his town. With disgust, he recounts how his father sucked up to the rich man and tells Mace that he lost all his respect for his father because of this. To the Superior, wanting to become scum is worse than being scum; that is to say, the fact that Mace has been masquerading as an Inhuman disgusts him.

However, Mace is useful, in that S.H.I.E.L.D. will come looking for him, as the Superior explains to Mace. Seeing as the Superior wants to get Coulson, this plan makes sense; after all, the Superior believes Coulson is responsible for the recent influx of aliens and superhumans, who he also hopes to eradicate.

Mace was captured by the Superior and his Watchdogs in "Boom." Despite learning that the serum that gives him his powers could send him into cardiac arrest, he used it to try and stop a battalion of Watchdogs from reaching Daisy, Fitz and Simmons. His plan worked, but the Watchdogs were able to overpower him and took him away.
