In the mid-season finale of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Season 4, Director Jeffrey Mace suited up along with Coulson and his team -- and that may not be the last time he dons his super suit. As it turns out, the episode that airs on January 17 will be titled "The Patriot," which suggests Mace may take up his comic book moniker.

According to the official episode description,

Coulson and Mack discover a shocking secret about Mace, which leaves all of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a dangerous position.

Guests: Jason O'Mara, Mallory Jansen, Adrian Pasdar, Maximilian Osinski, Patrick Cavanaugh, Troy Caylak, Kimberley Drummond, Shelly Robertson, Alastair Bayardo

The synopsis itself is likely referring to "what really happened" when Helmut Zemo attacked the UN during the signing of the Sokovia Accords in Vienna, which took place in "Captain America: Civil War." "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has been clear that Mace was hailed as a hero for his actions during this attack, and that this is one of the reasons he was installed as the New Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, his actions may not have been as heroic as they seemed, as Simmons was able to blackmail him with "what really happened" that day, though whatever she knows was never revealed on screen. This seems to suggest that Mace has a secret that could tarnish his public persona, which is founded on team-building and transparency. That's sure to throw a wrench into his favorite motto: "A team that trusts is a team that triumphs."

Additionally, it's worth noting that this episode will see the return of Adrian Pasdar, who plays Brigadier General Glenn Talbot. Fans last saw Talbot in the tail-end of Season 3 when he helped S.H.I.E.L.D. obtain classified codes that enabled them block Hive’s plans, but it is currently unclear what role the character will be performing in this next appearance.

Of course, in the comics, Mace is a superhero in his own right. Debuting in 1941 in “The Human Torch” #4, Jeffrey Solomon Mace was a Daily Bugle reports who was inspired by the exploits of Captain America to become a superhero. Despite lacking superpowers, Mace donned a costume and dubbed himself the Patriot, an identity he used to fight crime, often with his sidekick Miss Patriot. He helped to found the Liberty Legion, referred to as “America’s home front heroes,” and even adopted the identity of Captain America following the disappearance of Steve Rogers and the death of William Naslund (formerly the Spirit of ’76).

Returning Tuesday, January 10 at 10 pm ET/PT on ABC, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Chloe Bennet as Daisy “Quake” Johnson, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie and more.
