SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "The Law of Inferno Dynamics," the mid-season finale of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

As Eli Morrow got ready to go nuclear, a surprising member of S.H.I.E.L.D. took it upon himself to join the fight. Yes, Director Jeffrey Mace himself entered the fray, and he even got a new super suit for the occasion.

Multiple shots of Mace's costume have since cropped up online, showing the outfit in detail. Mace's big moment won't come as a big surprise to comic book fans, for he is better known as a superhero called the Patriot in the Marvel Comics Universe. Nevertheless, the suit -- complete with armored plates and a S.H.I.E.L.D. logo in the center of the chest -- is well worth a second look.

In the comics, Jeffrey Solomon Mace was a reporter for the Daily Bugle who wished to be part of the war effort, just like Captain America. Though he had no superpowers of his own, he eventually donned a costume, calling himself the Patriot; during his news beats, he would become his alter ego when he spotted trouble, even earning Steve Rogers’ praise at one point.

Of course, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s" Mace has a few powers of his own. An Inhuman, Mace has super strength as well as a degree of invulnerability, which was pushed to the limit when he went toe-to-toe with Ghost Rider. In the mid-season finale, he looked the part of superhero with his suit upgrade.

The second photo captured above also reveals another big moment from the episode. Director Mace redeemed Daisy "Quake" Johnson in the public eye and reestablished her as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. He explained away her earlier actions as a covert operation he authorized, thereby taking responsibility for her. As such, she no longer has to stick to the shadows, and she has been reunited with her original team.

By absolving Daisy, Mace also freed himself from the bonds of Nadir's blackmail. After all, she was holding a secret video of Daisy and Ghost Rider over him, but -- now that he has explained her actions away -- he no longer has to hide it. However, it's clear we haven't seen the last of her.

Returning Tuesday, January 10 at 10 pm ET/PT on ABC, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Chloe Bennet as Daisy “Quake” Johnson, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie and more.
