WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5, debuting in December.

When Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns this December, the show will bring with it an artifact that was first introduced back in Season 2: The monolith. However, this one will be slightly different than the monolith that transported Jemma Simmons to Maveth.

Those that were lucky enough to be attend the ABC show's panel at New York Comic Con were treated to the first twenty minutes of the Season 5 premiere. The footage picks up shortly after the scene in the Season 4 finale, which saw our Agents seemingly frozen in time at a diner after a group of mysterious men enter and surround them.

The finale's post-credit bumper later showed Coulson standing before a window staring out into space, from space, hinting that the S.H.I.E.L.D. team would be headed beyond of Earth for their fifth outing -- something that the showrunners quickly confirmed. Now, thanks to the footage from NYCC, we have a better idea of how certain members of the team will rendezvous with their leader.

When Coulson and the team -- with one exception -- are taken from the diner, they are moved to a new location while still frozen. Once they're freed from their paralysis, they find themselves greeted by the sight of a monolith similar to the one that transported Simmons to Maveth. While we don't know where, exactly, the monolith sends the rest of the team, we do know that it transports Coulson to a space station that is experiencing an invasion. And he isn't the only human being that's been transported there -- upon his arrival, he is greeted by several others who are still frozen in time. Eventually, he's reunited with much of the rest of his team, before the footage concluded.

The monoliths are, of course, constructs of the Kree, an alien race who has cast a long shadow over Coulson and his team since Season 1. That another figures into the next story arc makes sense, particularly given the revelation that the Kree will finally make themselves known in the living, blue flesh, in Season 5.
