It’s official: Hydra is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — sort of. At the end of “Self Control,” the last episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, Daisy “Quake” Johnson and Jemma Simmons entered the Framework, a virtual world not unlike “The Matrix.” In the Framework, Coulson and his team have been living their “ideal” lives; that is, lives without regret. However, that means the Framework’s MCU has changed in fundamental ways, not the least of which is the fact that Hydra was never stopped from taking over S.H.I.E.L.D. In other words: Hydra’s back, and it looks like they’re there to stay.
In anticipation of Hydra’s return, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s” official Facebook page has dropped several new propaganda posters. Bearing slogans like “Where Hydra thrives, you thrive” and “Vigilance against Inhumans,” each poster teases Hydra’s surveillance state within the Framework. They also suggest that the Framework is no safe place for Inhumans; at least half of the posters want citizens to report any “suspicious” Inhuman behavior — which may mean Daisy is in more trouble than she thought. One poster ominously warns that a lack of proper identification will result in “detention and sanitation.”
“Self Control” closed with an ominous tease of Hydra’s resurgence, as May was seen in the Triskelion, which bore the Hydra logo. It’s unclear what role Hydra will play, though it’s sure to be a big one and Ward will likely be a part of it. After all, in the show’s first season, Ward was revealed to be a Hydra mole within S.H.I.E.L.D. Nevertheless, he continued his obsession with Daisy and S.H.I.E.L.D., eventually murdering Coulson’s love interest Rosalind “Roz” Price in cold blood. In several new photos from the show’s April return, Ward looks mighty comfortable in his new position.
According to the official synopsis for “What If,” the next episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”,
