Agents of SHIELD: [SPOILER] Gets Left Behind in the Framework

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for “Farewell, Cruel World!”, the latest episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

In “Farewell, Cruel World!”, the latest episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, Daisy and her team located the backdoor out of the Framework. However, when it came time to leave, one agent stayed behind. Having gotten a taste of a reality where his daughter Hope survived, Mack decided to stay in the Framework.

When the team arrived at the backdoor, it looked nothing like it was supposed to. Daisy was expecting a serene water fountain. Instead, they found a steel mill and a pit of molten metal. She quickly put two-and-two together; though Aida couldn’t move or close the backdoor, she did disguise it in a way that made it nearly impossible to go through. Nevertheless, Daisy was able to open the backdoor by using her powers to blast the molten metal out of the way.

Though Coulson was quick to make a leap of faith, the others weren’t as on board. May thought they were crazy; Mack was furious that he had been led astray by someone with an “insane” theory. However, when Coulson fell through the backdoor, it caused a ripple through the Framework that made both doubting agents realize that Daisy had indeed been telling the truth.

The team’s trip through the backdoor wasn’t exactly simple. Furious that Simmons had killed his father in her effort to get through to him, Fitz showed up with a legion of Hydra soldiers, who engaged in a firefight with S.H.I.E.L.D. Though they won the first round, Coulson was seriously wounded and tumbled through the backdoor in an effort to save his own life. May soon followed, and both made it through to the real world.

Simmons was similarly wounded in a confrontation with Fitz, who shot her in the leg and almost killed her in his quest for revenge. His victory was short-lived; Radcliffe — who had led Fitz to the location — turned on him and forced him through the backdoor at gunpoint, apologizing the whole way. Simmons followed them, leaving Mack and Daisy alone.

Mack was shaken by the prospect of leaving Hope behind. Asked if Hope was on the other side, Daisy couldn’t bring herself to lie and told Mack that Hope didn’t survive long past birth. Upon hearing that, Mack decided to stay, though Daisy pleaded with him and tried to persuade him by explaining that Hope wasn’t real. He wouldn’t budge on the topic, and so Daisy exited the Framework without him. Mack ultimately returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. and reunited with Hope, though he appeared deeply unsettled.

Airing Tuesdays at 10 pm ET/PT on ABC, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Chloe Bennet as Daisy “Quake” Johnson, Ming-Na Wen as Melinda May, Iain De Caestecker as Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Jemma Simmons, Henry Simmons as Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie and more.
