Jemma Simmons is dead! Long live Jemma Simmons! In “Self-Control,” the last episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, the series ended on a rather dour note when Daisy and Simmons entered the Framework, a virtual world not unlike “The Matrix.” There, they found a world run by Hydra, but that’s not all. Just before the credits rolled, we got a glimpse of a grave bearing Simmons’ name — which wouldn’t seem so bad, but death in the Framework means death in the real world.
In a new clip from “What If,” the next episode, Daisy goes looking for her friend, only to discover — to her horror — that Simmons and 200 other S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy members died from contamination. According to her cause of death report, a toxic bio agent was accidentally released on campus, and the entire area remains under quarantine.

But is all hope truly lost for Simmons? Probably not. Speaking to CBR, executive producer Jed Whedon teased, “I think that, if we were going to write [Simmons] out of the show, it would not be off-screen because we love her so, so much. I think she will have to overcome her own childhood tribulations in the Framework, and it looks like they’ll be a little bit harder than Daisy’s. Daisy woke up in a warm tub; I have a feeling that’s not where Simmons will find herself.”
In the Framework, Agent Phil Coulson and his team have been living their “ideal” lives; that is, lives without regret. However, that means the Framework’s MCU has changed in fundamental ways, not the least of which is the fact that Hydra was never stopped from taking over S.H.I.E.L.D. In other words: Hydra’s back, and it looks like they’re there to stay.
According to the official synopsis for “What If,” the next episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”,
Hail the New World Order! Daisy and Simmons uncover secrets and lies in a world gone mad. With Hydra in control, they are our only hope to save everyone.
