While fans are already placing bets on what character Angel alum J. August Richards might play on ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. -- it's definitely not Luke Cage -- and wondering whether the Spider-Man television rights would permit the wall-crawler to swing by, Joss Whedon wants to make something clear: The upcoming series isn't about the Marvel superhero cameo of the week.

"The show is about the six people who are in the show," he tells IGN.com. "And very week we’ll meet somebody that they have to deal with. Some of those people will be very sympathetic, some of them will be evil, some will be from the Marvel canon, some will reference it -- but it’s not an Easter egg hunt. It really is just about the lives of these people as they’re dealing with this super-world."

Yeah, yeah, so then Richards is playing Rage, right?

"You know, he’s just a guy," Whedon says. "I mean, the whole point of this show is, they’re just guys. They’re not the Avengers, they’re not the fancy ones. They’re the people that got sort of hit in the blowback of this super-world. So he’s kind of an everyman. He appears to be a very fierce everyman!"

Airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Chloe Bennet as Skye and Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, and co-creator/pilot director Joss Whedon. The series also stars Ming-Na as Agent Melina May, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Gemma Simmons and Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz.
