Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are on board to produce a film adaptation of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' comic book series "Sleeper" for Warner Bros., as reported Thursday evening by Variety.

"The Shield" creator Shawn Ryan and David Wiener (who's written for "The Killing" and Ryan's "Last Resort") are set to write; Jennifer Todd, president of Affleck and Damon's production company Pearl Street Films, is also producing. No directors or actors are currently attached to the project.

The "Sleeper" news furthers Affleck's relationship with DC Comics-owned characters, as the actor is set to play Batman in 2015's "Man of Steel" sequel.

"Sleeper" ran in multiple volumes from 2003 to 2005 under DC Comics' now-defunct Wildstorm imprint, as part of the Wildstorm Universe. The series followed lead character Holden Carver, equipped with the power to absorb redirect it to others (sometimes in lethal amounts), going undercover in an organization led by Wildstorm villain Tao. The series was the first major collaboration between the Eisner Award-winning team of Brubaker and Phillips, who have subsequently worked together on "Criminal," "Incognito" and current Image Comics series "Fatale."

In 2008, "Sleeper" was reported to be in development with "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi's production company Stars Road Entertainment, with Tom Cruise in talks to play the lead role. At the time, Brubaker told CBR News that it was the fifth time there had been serious Hollywood interest in the property.
