Claiming that it's "the right time for me," David Westin announced his resignation yesterday from his position as president of ABC News after 13 years.

Westin will stay on until the end of the year, according to the memo he sent to ABC News staff yesterday, in order to make the search for, and transition to, his replacement as smooth as possible. In the memo, he explained his decision to leave - made a month ago, apparently - by saying, "As rewarding as I’ve found my time here, there are some other things I want to do professionally -- things that I cannot explore while fulfilling my responsibilities here."

Anne Sweeney, ABC Television President, released a follow-up statement, promising to name Westin's successor soon.
