ABC Hopes To See Jessica Jones, The Hulk In Next Pilot Season

ABC expects to see the eagerly anticipated Marvel projects The Hulk and AKA Jessica Jones by the next pilot season, setting the live-action series on a course for a fall 2012 premiere.

“We’re extremely excited by having Marvel in the fold,” ABC President Paul Lee said Sunday during the Television Critics Association press tour. “We’ve developing aggressively both AKA Jessica Jones and The Hulk. Hopefully we’ll have two very good choices to look at around the pilot season next year.”

Announced in October, the Hulk revival is being developed by Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro and Battlestar Galactica executive producer David Eick. Plans for AKA Jessica Jones, based on Alias by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos, were revealed two months later, with Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg on board as writer and producer. They’re the first live-action projects from Marvel’s fledgling television division, which also has Cloak & Dagger and Mockingbird in the pipeline.

While Lee acknowledged that The Hulk may seem like a departure for the network, which tends to target female viewers, he envisions it as falling under the broader “family viewing” umbrella.

“Family entertainment, Hulk is a classic example of it,” IGN quotes him as saying. “You remember No Ordinary Family wasn’t our best moment and yet it was the highest co-viewing [family] show of the year. So I absolutely think there’s room. I think Charlie’s Angels is an example of it. I think Last Man Standing is an example of It, for great family entertainment. And that’s a sort of wider band around our central target.”
