ABC Family has given a straight-to-series order to "Shadowhunters," a drama based on author Cassandra Clare's bestselling YA novels "The Mortal Instruments." Production is set to begin in May in Toronto.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project from Constantin Film, which produced "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," is being eyed as a 13-episode series.

"The Mortal Instruments" centers on Clary Fray, who discovers on her 18th birthday that she descends from a long line of Shadowhunters, human-angel hybrids who hunt demons. The novels are actually part of a much larger epic called "The Shadowhunter Chronicles."

The possibility of a television series was first mentioned in October by Constantin's Martin Moszkowicz, who said, "There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the 'Mortal Instruments' film. In the series we’ll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.”The 2013 film grossed just $90.5 million worldwide, leading Constantin to go "back to the drawing board."
