Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here's the archive of the moments posted so far!

Today we look at Rick Remender and Eric Nguyen's Gigantic!

Enjoy!

The concept behind Gigantic is a clever one. Writer Rick Remender takes on the idea of giant robots fighting other giant robots (or giant monsters, or whatever) but tries to turn the concept on its head a bit by giving us background on the fellow who is, effectively, the giant robot.

Admittedly, the story gets away from Remender a bit towards the end of the story, but the initial issues are so cool that I'm willing to still recommend the book.

Similarly, towards the last couple of issues (which took awhile to come out), Eric Nguyen's art looks more than a little bit rushed.

But the early stuff?

So cool!

The idea of the giant alien television company "canceling" Earth is a clever one, and it sets up the concept well to have Gigantic fight various other monsters in defense of Earth.

Of course, Remender is not one to let things go extremely straightforward, and at the end of issue #4, there's a major twist that turns the series on its head AGAIN. Clever stuff.

I also like how Remender handles the sheer devastation that comes as a result of a giant robot stomping around in a major metropolitan area - even though he tries to avoid it, he ends up killing lots of people just by moving (he was supposed to show up in an uninhabited area, but the bad guys jammed his transportation so he shows up in the middle of San Francisco).

Like I said before, towards the end of the series, the plot gets a bit on the loose side (as does the art), but the early issues and the concept are strong enough that I'd still recommend the book.

It'll probably read best in a tradepaperback, as the delays between #4 and #5 weren't helpful, either.

You can pre-order the trade at Dark Horse's website! Check out their section on Gigantic here (each issue has at least three preview pages if you want to take a look there, as well).

I can't to see what Eric Nguyen has planned next! He's a great artist!
