Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the comics posted so far!
We continue the Cool Christmas Comic Countdown with an intriguing Captain America story by J.M. DeMatteis, Paul Neary and Eduardo Baretto titled “An American Christmas”…
Throughout the issue, Captain America has been having nightmares of a crow tormenting him. He tried to put it out of his mind while he hung out in New York City with his girlfriend, Bernie, including a very interesting discussion with his Jewish girlfriend…
More time passes, Steve celebrates Hanukah with Bernie and it is finally Christmas Eve and all the various cast members that DeMatteis had slowly populated the book with (he really did a nice job developing the supporting cast during his run on Cap) attend a Christmas Eve party (there’s a lot of good character bits during the party) when he is confronted by the Black Crow once again…
The fight continues for a number of more pages and it ends with the sort of Christmas message that you would expect from a J.M. DeMatteis comic book. And if you haven’t read enough J.M. DeMatteis comic books to know for sure what would be an expected ending of a J.M. DeMatteis comic book, then you really ought to read more J.M. DeMatteis comic books, because he is neat-o.
In any event, this was a good issue – a lot different than a typical Christmas issue. Very much off the beaten path.
