Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here's the archive of the moments posted so far!

Today we look at Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen's Nextwave, Agents of HATE

Enjoy!

Before Nextwave, we all knew that Stuart Immonen was a great artist. It was pretty darn obvious. However, I think beginning with Nextwave, Immonen raised his game from his already impressive level to an entirely new level of awesomeness.

For example, check out this sequence from issue #1...

Look at the power, the fluidity, the detail, the dynamism!!!

I forget who it was (Quesada, maybe?), but someone made a great point about how few artists could draw with the looseness of Immonen but still provide the details of the engine of the car that is being exploded - and make it look like that is what a car's engine would look like if exploded.

So yeah - Immonen is amazing.

But lucky for him (and for us), Nextwave was not just about the art.

Nope, writer Warren Ellis delivered a delightfully madcap adventure story about five E-List superheroes who got tricked into working for the bad guys. Now that they know that they're working for the bad guys...hmmm...let's just let the Nextwave primer get you up to speed...

Along the way, Ellis introduced to the world a great deal of awesome catch phrases, such as...

"Fin Fang Foom put you in his pants"

Machine Man calling humans "Fleshy ones"

"My robot brain needs beer."

Not really a catch phrase, but I love Tabby's "I gave him the explodo because I am clever" after Tabitha fails to be mesmerized like her teammates because she lacked the cognitive capacity to be mesmerized...

Speaking of clever, Ellis came up with the great idea of doing an Ultimates riff, only with the Not Brand Echh takes on the Marvel characters...

This was a great book, and the entire series is getting the deluxe hardcover treatment very soon! Hooray!
