Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here's the archive of the comics posted so far!

Today we take a look at the first House of Mystery Annual from last year!

The framing sequence is a mask that links our House of Mystery heroine, Fig, to the other stories in the past. Matt Sturges, Luca Rossi and Jose Marzan, Jr. open the tale in a cute fashion, with a tale of why Fig does not like Halloween...

Of course, she is going to like Halloween even less when the mask takes over!

Next, we get a tale by Mark Buckingham (with a story assist by Bill Willingham and an inking assist from Kevin Nowlan) about what happens when Merv Pumpkinhead takes over the Dreaming for one night and gets the ghosts and ghouls liquored up before they go start haunting people (hilarity ensues).

In the Hellblazer story by Peter Milligan, Giuseppe Camuncoli and Stefano Landini, Constantine ignores an acquaintance, who then gets into some demon troubles...

Spooky stuff.

Chris Roberson and Mike Allred tell an offbeat little tale in their iZombie story...

But the spookiest story of the bunch is definitely the Madame Xanadu story by Matt Wagner, Amy Reeder and Richard Friend, where a young woman with a humdrum life is possessed by all the alternate realities that the mask can show her...

Very scary stuff.

Anyhow, this was a great opener to what I hope will be a long-running Vertigo tradition!!
