Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the comics posted so far!
Today we look at the Perhapanauts Halloween Spooktacular #1 from last year!
The Perhapanauts is a group of characters who work for a special government team where they hunt down dangerous creatures from myth. Created by writer Todd Dezago and artist Craig Rousseau, the book takes a slightly offbeat approach to what amounts to be a pretty serious endeavor. The team members alternate between superpowered humans and “good” monsters and ghosts. Their most popular members are probably Big (Big Foot, natch) and Choopie, a chupacabra.
In the spooktacular, we get two Halloween-related stories plus one “normal” team mission.
The first Halloween-related story is written by Dezago with art by Fred Hembeck. It is about the team allowing Choopie to go out trick or treating, since this is the one night he will be able to mix with humans without being detected. Of course, what they don’t expect is that a creature that FEEDS on chupacabra might see him. He also meets a young boy who is dressed as a chupacabra for Halloween.
The second tale is a straightforward “case file,” written by Dezago with artwork by Rich Woodall and Ken McFarlane.
This is a nice, scary story and Choopie has a good moment (it is especially interesting to see how they get around the whole “can’t leave monster prints” plot point) in it.
Finally, the main creators get together for a story of Big visiting a friend in the Amazon to reflect on his general loneliness as seemingly the only one of his kind…
This works well in two ways – it is a great intro to the Perhapanauts for new readers but it is also a strong collection of entertaining stories with good art (it is always fun to see Fred Hembeck art, Rich Woodall does a good job and Rousseau, of course, is THE man on these characters).
