Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the comics posted so far!
Today we look at Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera’s Scalped, specifically the four-part storyline The Gravel in Your Guts, which ran from #21-24 (there’s spoilers involved in the piece, not for this storyline, but for earlier Scalped stuff)
The Gravel In Your Guts deals with the nominal “bad guy” of Scalped, the Tribal Chief Lincoln Red Crow. He runs the casino on the reservation and he has made a lot of awful friends and he has done a lot of awful things, but like many people like him, he feels as though he can justify everything he’s done, as though everything he has done has had its purpose.
The other main character in this four-parter is Dino Poor Bear, a poor kid on the reservation who gets caught up in the corrupt world of the reservation police (who Red Crow controls).
Here we see him dealing with his situation…
Finally, the third main character (in a way) is Gina Bad Horse, mother to the nominal “good guy” of Scalped, Dasheill Bad Horse. She was killed earlier in the series. And in this story, a tribal elder gives Lincoln the task of taking care of Gina’s soul bundle…
Meanwhile, Lincoln has to deal with the gangsters who helped finance his casino…
R.M. Guera devastated those pages – he was awesome in this arc.
These plots all combine to lead to this moment, which Aaron and Guera nicely OPENED the story showing us (and later return to for part 4)…
Great character moments, and the whole thing ends with an absolutely brilliant inner monologue by Bad Crow in Part 4.
Very good arc.
