Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the moments posted so far!
Today we look at Michael Kupperman’s Tales Designed to Thrizzle..
Tales Designed to Thrizzle is one of those books where you might really need to see it to believe it.
Michael Kupperman delivers thirty-odd pages of the most delightfully absurd ideas that you can imagine, to the point where I don’t know if simply describing the comic would do it justice (somewhat similar to some of Garth Ennis’ comics – “He did WHAT to his WHAT? That’s sick! Why would I want to read that?!”?”).
I was going to sample from each of the five issues that have come out so far (it is roughly one issue a year, as Kupperman is a busy fellow – he’s trying to adapt his special kind of comedic talent into the world of television), but then I realized, “Eh, you pretty much get the concept from the first two issues – it also saves on the scanning time.”
The first issue is split into different sections – a kids section, an adults section and an old people section. It is strictly enforced…
Here’s one of his most “out there” jokes period, and this is a guy who does lots of “out there” jokes!
Here is probably his two most famous characters, Snake and Bacon, who go on all sorts of adventures (they’re tough cops in the Dirty Harry style sometimes, but here they are time travelers trying to figure out who killed Casanova) while, of course, only saying “Ssss” (from the Snake) and describing the many attributes of bacon (from the Bacon)
Brace yourself for…Pagus!
I’m glad that this debate is finally finished…
Finally, from issue #2, a slightly…different take on Captain Marvel’s origin…
Tales Designed to Thrizzle is pretty straightforward – if you like the above jokes, you’ll dig the book. If you don’t, well, you won’t.
I, for one, think it’s one of the very best comics currently made.
