Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the moments posted so far!
Today we take a look at a one-off issue of Nightwing that was ranked #11 on the Greatest Chuck Dixon Stories Ever Told! – Nightwing #25 by Dixon and Scott McDaniel!
The set-up for this one-off issue of Nightwing (set during the strange little period between the Gotham Earthquake and No Man’s Land) is easily explained, as we’ll see on these next few pages…
That’s the set-up for the rest of the issue – Nightwing and Robin, Batman’s two “boys,” hanging out on a train blindfolded talking.
Dixon was the writer on the titles of both characters at the time, so he definitely had each of their “voices” down pat, and he could reference stuff that perhaps a writer not as familiar with each character would miss out on (like Robin’s girlfriend, Stephanie Brown, being pregnant at the time).
In any event, that’s what the issue was – a lot of strong character work, like when Robin teases Dick about the women he’s dated…
Dixon also makes sure to throw in some active danger, and McDaniel draws it well (he is a great action artist), and Dixon does a nice job explaining the point of this seemingly silly exercise…
Later on, they also encounter some thieves, just so there’s SOME fighting in the issue – but otherwise it was just heartfelt discussions between two characters who really did not get as much of a chance to interact in the comics.
And the issue ends with a major change in Dick Grayson’s life – making it a proper ending to a 25th issue.
This was a strong issue.
