Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here's the archive of the moments posted so far!

Today we take a look at Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes #314-315, the trial of Ontiir, written by Paul Levitz, Keith Giffen and Terry Shoemaker, which was on the Greatest Supergirl Stories Ever Told list!

The concept of this two-parter is that a spy from the Dark Circle that the Legion tangled with a year or so before this issue is now on trial. The three Legionnaires who fought him, Brainiac 5, Sun Boy and Supergirl, are at his trial when he drops a bombshell - he claims that he was secretly a TRIPLE agent secretly spying FOR the Science Police while PRETENDING to spy for the Dark Circle.

And before the trial could be finished, though, the Dark Circle comes to spring Ontiir.

Some great artwork by Terry Shoemaker above, but also really strong breakdowns by Giffen. He's such a brilliant breakdown...er? breakdowner? I guess breakdown artist.

In any event, Supergirl is not going to let Ontiir get away so easily, so she and the other two Legionnaires go to find him...

Ontiir, meanwhile, finds himself on trial by the Dark Circle, too! And to THEM he claims he's actually a QUADRUPLE agent, spying on the Science Police while pretending to be spying for the Science Police while spying for the Dark Circle.

In the meantime, Supergirl is enjoying her time in the future...for now...

Naturally, Brainiac 5 DOES figure out where the Dark Circle is hiding, and in the ensuing fight...

Who was Ontiir REALLY working for?

We'll never know, and Supergirl does not take it well...

That final sequence is particularly moving when you realize that she never DID return, as she died in the Crisis on Infinite Earths before ever returning back to the future. That's some heavy duty hindsight poignancy right there.

So there you have it - the original Supergirl's LAST Legion mission (not counting Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? of course).
