A Year of Cool Comics – Day 104

by  in Comic News Comment

Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the moments posted so far!

Today we take a look at Star Wars’ answer to Rosencrantz and Guilderstern – Tag and Bink Are Dead (courtesy of Kevin Rubio and Lewis Marangon…
.
Enjoy!

When he did his first Tag and Bink stories for Star Wars comics, Kevin Rubio was best known as the fellow who made that great internet parody of COPS, starring Stormtroopers (called TROOPS).

He continues with his gentle ribbing of the Star Wars Universe with Tag and Bink Are Dead, a riff on the famous Tom Stoppard play where Stoppard takes two minor characters from Hamlet and uses them to comment on (and occasionally mock) the play.

Here, Tag and Bink are rebels who are on the same ship as Princess Leia when she gets captured at the beginning of the first Star Wars movie…

They are captured by Stormtroopers…

but they escape and impersonate Stormtroopers on the Death Star.

They escape, but end up bringing back the Milennium Falcon…

They are also the Stormtroopers that Obi-Wan sneaks by to turn off the tractor beam keeping the good guys from escaping…

In issue #2, set during Empire Strikes Back, they get caught up in shenanigans involving Boba Fett and Cloud City…

This is a cute, well-drawn comic that actually works well as a story even if you don’t know anything about Star Wars, although obviously it works a lot better if you are familiar with the movies.

The sequel was good, too, I might feature that one sometime!
