Today we look at a cool scene from early on in Akira.

The opening bike race scene from Akira is remarkable to me in three major ways:

1. Writer/artist Katsuhiro Otomo puts so much striking energy into the motorcycles racing that it is almost like you can see them actually moving.

2. In just these few pages, he does a great deal of characterization - all in the midst of a cool-looking action sequence! That's quite a feat right there.

3. In the conclusion to the racing sequence, he has a breathtaking visual that also serves as a heavy piece of exposition, but it doesn't feel like that at all.

Such great storytelling.
