Every day this month I'm going to feature a current comic book writing "star," someone who I think is a very good writer.

I'm mostly going to try to keep from the biggest names as much as possible, because, really, do I need to talk more about the awesomeness of Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and Warren Ellis?

Here is the archive of previously featured writers.

Today we look at a hilarious comic book comedy duo.

Enjoy!

Andrew Boyd and Ryan Yount are the co-writers of the hilarious Scurvy Dogs comic book series (Yount draws the book), which is collected into one delightfully packed with content volume by AIT/Planet-LAR.

The series stars a group of odd pirates who are tying to make it in modern society where they are quite the anachronism. The group is made up of Captain Blackbeard, McDougal the strongman, Jefe the crazy Spaniard, Pappy, the old guy with the eyepatch, hook hand, and peg leg and Irish Pete, the mute scrapper.

To say that these stories are madcap would be to undersell the term "madcap," as these comics are just off the wall laugh riots.

Bill Reed featured the book as one of his Reasons to Love Comics here, and he helpfully shares a few pages from the comic to show you some of the absolutely zany jokes this comic tells (Bill also supplied the description of the cast used above).

How about when the comic turns just to crayon drawings out of nowhere?

This scene with the Portuguese lepers is the opener of the book and leads to one of the best punchlines I've seen - it is the sort of thing you just give to people to read and that will sell the book right there.

I only wish that Boyd and Yount would give us more Scurvy Dogs!

Someone has GOT to get me a copy of their one-shot follow-up to Scurvy Dogs (both Boyd and Yount have full-time jobs, so they don't get to do too much comic output)....American Space Ninja (in Space)!

But I will settle for the pair doing more work together in the future!
