All throughout May, I’ll spotlight a different webcomic. Like with the month of independent comics and the month of LGBT comics, I figure I will let you webcomic creators out there suggest your comic for spotlight during this month. So if you want me to spotlight your comic, drop me a line at email@example.com!
Today we look at Sam Costello’s standout horror anthology, Split Lip. Split Lip features stories written by Costello and drawn by a host of very talented artists. Each story is serialized and eventually they’re each collected into a series of affordable trade paperbacks.
Costello does a marvelous job coming up with unique approaches to the horror genre. I mean, don’t get me wrong, if you read enough horror comics, you have a pretty good idea that something is going bad is going to happen, but Costello excels at making the twists as unpredictable as possible.
The latest story is an ingenious tale about a Hollywood starlet from the days of silent pictures and how she is unprepared for “Talkies.” What is she willing to do to keep her career alive? The artwork by John Bivens is outstanding.
Here are a few sample pages to show you how well Costello conceptualizes the tale…
Really striking stuff, right?
A few years back, I reviewed one of the trade paperback collections of Split Lip. You can read that review here.
As far as I can tell, Split Lip is the best horror anthology on the internet. You can read one of the many archived stories (for free) at the Split Lip website here.
