All throughout May, I'll spotlight a different web comic. Like with the month of independent comics and the month of LGBT comics, I figure I will let you web comic creators out there suggest your comic for spotlight during this month. Today we look at a web comic that is, in its own way, attempting to do with web comics what Stan Lee did with the early days of the Marvel Superhero Universe. Basically, writers Eric Carter and Jason Bane do a series of web-comics all within the same universe. Every comic can be read on its own, but the comics read together gives you a sense of the universe that they have created and that all of the characters inhabit. What you have is five alien races and their experiences once inter-planetary travel has been discovered. So each comic shows you a little bit of each race, but since they're all one big universe (and the stories are set all over the place, timeline-wise) you learn new things about the shared universe no matter what book you're reading.

One of the keys to Carpe Chaos is that Carter and Bane make a point of showing us a different side of a traditional space comic, at least from a genre perspective.

To wit, you have basically Defiant Ones, with aliens...

(after a few pages of their misadventures)

Or you have an exploration of the religion of one of the races...

(the quote lasts a few pages)

The art for both of those stories above, by the way, was done by Anthony Cournoyer. He's the lead artist for Carpe Chaos.

So anyhow, another neat aspect of Carpe Chaos is that since their comics are all over the place, timeline-wise, they actually have on their comics page (which you can find here) a timeline for how they recommend that you read the stories that they publish! Isn't that nifty?
