This month I am posting a review of a different self-published comic book each day for the rest of the month! Here is an archive of the books reviewed so far!
Today I am featuring Witch Doctor #1 by Brandon Seifert and Lukas Ketner.
What originally began as a portfolio piece to show off their skills as writer and artist, respectively, Witch Doctor #1 is a very accomplished comic book work by Brandon Seifert and Lukas Ketner.
The comic reminds me a great deal of Warren Ellis’ Avatar work, specifically his Gravel series, and I think that’s a high compliment for a comic book writer just making the scene like Seifert. Ketner’s art, meanwhile, has a strong polish to it that looks like it will only get even more polished and even tighter – but right now, it’s still good artwork.
The basic concept of the book is treating demons and the supernatural as just standard “diseases” against the “patient” Earth (humans are the Earth’s “anti-bodies”). Dr. Vincent Morrow is a former medical doctor who has taken his training over to the world of the supernatural as a protector of the Earth from demons, much like a strange doctor that Marvel features.
Ketner makes the work suitably eerie looking, and their take on vampirism is a lot of fun to read.
Here are some sample pages…
The first issue is not a long one, but it’s a strong intro.
You can check out more sample pages at their very impressive looking web site (which is always nice to see) here.
Brandon and Lukas sent me a copy of Witch Doctor #1. If you would like to participate in the month with your self-published comic, there probably is not enough time to be featured this month, but if you mail them, I’ll still review them eventually! Just check out the Review Copies section to see where to mail a review copy of your comic.
