All throughout June, I’ll spotlight a different web site about comic books.. Like with the month of independent comics, the month of LGBT comics and last month’s month of webcomics, I figure I will let you comic book site/blog owners out there suggest your comic book web site (or blog) for spotlight during this month. So if you want me to spotlight your comic book site, drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org!
Today we look at Geekscape.net, a news and commentary site geared toward “geek culture” in general, but with a large section of the site devoted to comic book conversation.
Like most sites of its ilk, Geekscape.net delivers news content about noteworthy stories in the world of comics, TV and film. They do that well, but I figure my time is better spent spotlighting the unique aspects of Geekscape.net.
One of the stand-out features on the site is Gayscape, a recurring column examining gay geek culture, written by Eric A. Diaz. It is quite interesting stuff. It does not appear to be currently updating, but there is an archive of past Gayscape columns here. Diaz’s examination of the “weird, wild world of slash fiction” was particularly interesting. You can check that out here.
The various Geekscape contributors often write in-depth comic book related columns that are compelling. The aforementioned Diaz just recently wrote an inspired plea for a Lois Lane comic book here.
Geekscape Managing Editor Brian Walton also wrote an interesting story on Landry Q Walker’s rejected Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures in the 9th Grade series idea (I saw this somewhere else, as well, but it is such an interesting story that I figure it is worth spotlighting whenever I get the chance!).
Similarly, Martin Scherer does a regular series of comic book commentary called Long Box Thoughts. You can check the archive of Scherer’s column out here.
Jarrett Gossett also does a weekly comic book review featured called Stack Attack. You can check that out here.
Geekscape also does a series of amusing Top 10 lists on all sorts of odd topics, including comic book related ones. This recent list is not a comic book related one, but it still made me laugh. Top 10 Places to Make Out in the Stark Trek: Next Generation Universe
