Usually when it comes to movie trailers, fans would be lucky to get even two and a half minutes of footage. Normally, studios will just pice together a clip-show of entertaining moments to get fans excited for the film, and that’s it. It seems the people who cut together the latest “trailer” for the upcoming Matt Damon film “The Great Wall” didn’t get that memo.
The latest trailer (below) shared by Archer Money on Youtube clocks in just shy of nine minutes, which has got to be some sort of new record. The trailer for Zhang Yimou’s upcoming film not only has tons of footage we’ve already seen, but also breaks down the groups of warriors that will exist in the project (the ones fighting on top of the Great Wall of China).
Judging by the footage, there are five different groups, each coded by the different colored armor that they were, as well as the animals that are on their helmets. Each group seems to have its own speciality (range, support, offense, etc), and when they come together, it’s a pretty intimidating group. Surprisingly, with all the groups included, there is one glaring omission: Matt Damon.
The trailers reasoning for that is most likely due to the fact that this is obviously footage meant for more Asian territories. For those who don’t know, when the film was first announced, there was a giant backlash as to whether or not Matt Damon should be starring in a film so wholly Chinese. To possibly downplay talks of “whitewashing,” this nine minute trailer has no real mention of Damon’s character, most likely to assuage critics beliefs that the film is nothing like it originally appeared.
“The Great Wall” is currently set to release February 17, 2017 domestically, and will have a Chinese premiere date of December 16, 2016.
