Jimmy Smits ("Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith") has joined the cast of Fox's upcoming "24" revival, "24: Legacy," in a leading role.

Variety reports that Smits is playing a character named John Donovan, who is described as a United States Senator with "higher political aspirations." His character is married to Rebecca (Miranda Otto), "the blazing smart former head of CTU."

"24: Legacy" also stars "Straight Outta Compton's" Corey Hawkins as military hero Eric Carter and "The Flash's" Teddy Sears as Keith Mullins, the current head of CTU and Rebecca's former right hand man.

Kiefer Sutherland will not be reprising his role as Jack Bauer for the revival, should it be picked up to series.

Howard Gordon, Manny Coto, Evan Katz and Brian Grazer are executive producing the pilot, which is to be directed by classic "24" helmer Stephen Hopkins ("Californication").

The "24: Legacy" pilot is expected to shoot this spring. If it's picked up, we can likely expect a debut sometime later this year.
