$22M Friday Sets ‘Star Trek Beyond’ on Course for $60M Opening Weekend

“Star Trek Beyond” made $22.3 million at the domestic box office Friday and is line to haul in between $56–$60 million over the weekend, according to reported projections.

The weekend’s top box-office earner, “Beyond” brought in $5.5 million during Thursday night screenings, but while it will coast to a first-place finish over the week’s competition, the draw will come in below the openings of the franchise’s previous two installments, as 2009’s “Star Trek” opened to $75.2 million and 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness” netted $70.2 million in its opening frame. “Beyond” sees Justin Lin take over the directorial reins from J.J. Abrams, who remains a producer in the Paramount/Bad Robot reboot of the storied series originally created by Gene Roddenberry.

“The Secret Life of Pets” holds second place at the box office in its third weekend of release, with “Ice Age: Collision Course,” “Lights Out,” and the Paul Feig-directed “Ghostbusters” reboot vying for third — each projected to bring in roughly $21 million. With a $5 million budget (per Deadline), the draw constitutes a win for the Warner Bros./New Line horror “Lights Out,” but the latest in Fox/Blue Sky’s “Ice Age” franchise is underperforming expectatons, and the receipts from “Ghostbusters” down 55% from last weekend’s opening, according to Variety.
